The Love Chapter supports LGBTQ+ people and allies

  • Meets as needed/irregularly.  Please contact the Church Office for details.
  • At Second Baptist Church's Community Room
  • For LGBTQ+ people, their parents, families, friends, and allies.

This new group, The Love Chapter, is designed to provide a safe space for LGBTQ+ people and allies to gather, to discuss, and to receive encouragement and support. Our goal is that people feel affirmed in who they are and encouraged on their life's journey.

Beyond affirmation, our hope is that questions can be asked and explored.  We know that many folks experiencing the "coming out" of a loved one have questions and need encouragement to be the most supportive they can be. It is a journey not only for the LGBTQ person, but also for his or her parents, siblings, and friends as well. There are all sorts of questions that arise about the use of language, the ways to be supportive, and how to respond to homophobic or hateful responses.

It is our hope that both church folks and people from the community will come and experience the camaraderie as we support and encourage each other.

The Church’s Response to LGBTQIA+ People

When I  am discussing the church’s response to LGBTQIA+ people, somebody will often say, “well, you know what the Bible says. . .” They then tell me what they think the Bible says.

What does the Bible really say about LGBTQIA+ people?  I preached 5 sermons on that subject in the fall of 2020.  In those sermons, I looked closely at the passages to which people refer when they say, “well you know what the Bible says.”

I believe that what we think the Bible says and what the Bible says don’t always align.
